Summer has officially arrived, and with schools out, our neighborhood is full of energy and activity. While it’s a wonderful time of year, summer also brings an uptick in petty crime and vandalism across the country—and right here at home. Let’s work together to keep Tara safe and secure by staying vigilant and proactive.
Crime Prevention Starts at Home
Simple steps can make a big difference. Here’s how you can help prevent theft and keep our community safe:
Always lock your vehicles, homes, garages, and storage sheds—even during the day.
Don’t leave valuables like lawn equipment, bikes, or toys unsecured in your yard or driveway.
Operation Key Fob
Make crime prevention part of your nightly routine with Operation Key Fob.Every night at 9:00 PM, press the lock button on your key fob from inside your home to ensure your vehicle is secure.
Additional Tips to Deter Car Burglaries:
Remove all valuables from your vehicle—especially guns, purses, laptops, and keys and key fobs.
Never leave anything visible, even in your carport.
Always lock your car and never leave it running unattended.
Use anti-theft devices when possible.
Park in well-lit areas for added safety.
Neighborhood Parking Reminders
How and where we park reflects the overall health and appearance of our community. Please be mindful of Baton Rouge city parking ordinances, which prohibits:
Parking in front yards (including street facing side yards on corner lots)
Parking on right-of-ways or sidewalks in front of your house
Blocking bicycle lanes
Parking against traffic flow
Leaving vehicles on the street for more than 9 hours

Golf Carts on the Move
We’ve seen an increase in golf cart use throughout Tara—and a few related complaints. Here’s what the State of Louisiana (RS 32:299.4A) and the City of Baton Rouge require if you drive a golf cart on public roads:
Must be registered as an off-road vehicle with a decal/VIN number displayed
Drivers must have a valid driver’s license
Liability insurance is required
Must be equipped with headlights, turn signals, brake lights, and mirrors
Top speed limit: 25 MPH
No alcohol use while operating—DUI laws apply
Always Report Crime Promptly
If you see suspicious activity or are a victim of a crime, always contact the Baton Rouge Police Department first. After reporting to the authorities, please notify the Tara Crime District so we can remain informed and respond appropriately. The security protocol is also listed on the Tara Civic Website.
Have a Safe & Happy Summer!Let’s continue to support each other and enjoy the season with peace of mind.
